The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is a department of New York state government. The department guides and regulates the conservation, improvement, and protection of New York's natural resources; manages Forest Preserve lands in the Adirondack and Catskill parks, state forest lands, and wildlife management areas; regulates sport fishing, hunting and trapping; and enforces the state's environmental laws and regulations.

Add your photos to help us monitor aquatic invasive plants at this site! Located in Brown's Bog at the NYSDEC Edwards Ave canoe launch. This is a great area for recreational fishing and boating along the Peconic river in Calverton, NY. The river is home to many fish species (largemouth bass, yellow perch, pumpkinseeds, bluegill, etc.) The DEC is currently monitoring the aquatic invasive plant species in this area. Of major concern is the perennial plant, water primrose (Ludwigia peploides). These are the plants that  you can  see growing in large islands of green throughout this area. They grow bright yellow flowers with 5 petals. Another aggressive invasive plant at this site is European frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae). These plants look like little lily pads but instead of a pizza slice shaped breaks in the leaves, they are more rounded heart shapes. The NYSDEC is doing a small pilot study in this area to use an herbicide to control these invasive species.

This is a good fishing location with sunfish, largemouth bass, carp, and is stocked every spring and fall with rainbow trout and brown trout.  The NYSDEC manages the aquatic invasive plant species in this water body. Water Chestnut (Trapa natans) is a plant that has floating rosettes of leaves on the surface of the water. These are an annual plants that yearly produces nuts that have very sharp barbs on them that can litter the shoreline and be a nuisance to people and dogs . They once formed very dense mats over much of the water's surface. With the help of a harvester and now yearly hand pulls of the plant the NYSDEC and Nassau Co. Parks have been able to manage this species to much lower levels and with continued efforts we hope to eventually eradicate this species. 

Massapequa Preserve 

Add your photos to help us monitor aquatic invasive species at this site! Wantagh Mill Pond is located in Nassau Country, NY. This area can be used for fishing and is surrounded by walking paths. There are many species of native and invasive species plants in this area. The NYSDEC is using this site to monitor the growth of Water Chestnut (Trapa natans).  This  plant has floating rosettes of leaves on the surface of the water. These are an annual plant that yearly produces nuts that have very sharp barbs on them that can litter the shoreline and be a nuisance to people and dogs. Hand pull efforts are done every year at this location to help control the population of this invasive.

This is a great area for recreational fishing and boating along the Peconic river in Calverton, NY. Of major concern is the perennial plant, water primrose (Ludwigia peploides). These are the plants that  you can  see growing in islands of green across the bank later in the summer they grow bright yellow flowers with 5 petals. Another aggressive invasive plant at this site is European frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae). These plants look like little lily pads but instead of a pizza slice shaped cut in the leaf, these have a rounded almost heart-shaped appearance. In the summer you may see their small white flowers with 3 petals. To help us prevent the spread of these species elsewhere on long island or the rest of the state please remember to clean, drain, and dry your boat between each time you use it!
