Portland Water District (PWD) is a quasi-municipal,  non-profit organization responsible for providing drinking water to eleven communities and treating wastewater from six communities. We are 190 people with a passion for protecting public health and the environment.  

PWD is part of the Momentum Conservation's Climate Change Observatory Network, a photo monitoring program designed to work with environmental organizations and communities to assist with the observation, measurement and documentation of long-term climate change trends and climate adaptation projects. 

Portland Water District

Sebago Lake is one of Maine's most important natural resources. It is one of the state’s largest lakes and, at over 300 feet deep, it is the deepest lake in New England. It serves as the drinking water supply for nearly 1/6 of Maine’s population as well as hundreds of thousands of visitors to the state each year. The view from this site captures the southern extent of the lake, known as Lower Bay, located at the intersection of Route 35 and Route 237 in Standish. On a clear day you can see Mount Washington on the horizon. 

The  Lower Bay of Sebago Lake is where water is withdrawn for treatment so, by state law, no trespassing is allowed on the water or ice in this part of the lake.
