This location near a retention pond is frequently assessed for water quality as a starting-point of the Zoo. Landscaping, runoff, and seasonal changes may alter plant communities, water level and flow, turbidity, oxygen levels, and aqautic life. In addition, presence or absence of keystone species can more drastically impact the landscape. The goal is to monitor recovery of this pond and better visualize and share these landscape changes with others in an effort to better educate about keystone species and advocate for our local wetlands and aquatic life.
The Birmingham Zoo is a 501c3 nonprofit accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that supports collective management of animal populations, research, and related conservation initiatives.
