Catlett Islands, one component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia, is located adjancent to Machicomoco State Park. Located within Gloucester County, Virginia, and on the North side of the York River, the Catlett Islands reserve encompasses 690 acres including forested and emergent wetlands, as well as tidal creeks.
From the pier, you can see the marshes and forests of Catlett Islands, including a large area of ghost forests - or trees that have died due to saltwater intrusion. Designated in 1991, Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA) is one of 30 protected areas that make up the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) established to promote informed management of the nation's estuaries and coastal habitats.
