Welcome to the Lowcountry! This beautiful view of Jarvis Creek and the surrounding salt marsh is from the Coastal Discovery Museum’s Osprey Outlook Boardwalk. The Coastal Discovery Museum is located on Hilton Head Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina. About 50% of Beaufort County is land and about 50% is made up of important and ever-changing tidal creek and salt marsh. This habitat not only changes seasonally, but it is also constantly changing every moment of every day as the tide flows in and out. The tide changes every 6 hours 12 minutes and 30 seconds and here in the Lowcountry the average tidal range is 7-9 feet! This salt marsh is home to variety of animals including periwinkle snails, fiddler crabs, eastern oysters, diamondback terrapins, ribbed mussels, and so much more. The smooth cordgrass has adapted to living in this ever-changing, salty environment and helps to hold the sediment together and create this vital habitat.
The Coastal Discovery Museum is known as “one of the most memorable destinations on Hilton Head Island.” With its historic and scenic location on vast, winding grounds at the island’s entrance, the Museum is home to a wide variety of programs and opportunities, educational and community resources, and hometown events. Above all the Museum is committed to its mission to Inspire People to Care for the Lowcountry, and creatively pursues this mission through a hands-on approach to getting visitors in touch with, and ultimately in love with, our region.
