Thank you for visiting Pine Glades Natural Area and helping us document the water level and vegetation change over time from the observation platform. This photopoint at Pine Glades overlooks a restored wetland ecosystem. Historically, portions of this area was used for agriculture and in the mid- to late-1970's ditches, dirt berms and roads were built for the establishment of a failed rural subdivision. From 1999 to 2006, Palm Beach County acquired this land for conservation and quickly worked to restore the site’s hydrology by removing the ditches, roads and berms, controlling the non-native invasive vegetation, and by installing hydrological control structures. Now, the 6,651-acre Pine Glades Natural Area attracts colorful wading birds including roseate spoonbill, great blue heron, little blue heron and white ibis. It’s a great place to capture an image in nature or bring your kayak or canoe to explore the wetlands.
Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) is a County agency responsibile for environmental programs that protect, preserve, and enhance Palm Beach County's natural resources on land and in & under water.
In 1991 and 1999, voters approved a total of $250 million in bond funds for the purchase of lands for conservation purposes. ERM manages more than 31,000 acres of these conservation lands across 37 sites. These are some of the County’s last wild places. PBC Natural Areas are open sunrise to sunset and are free for all to enjoy passive, nature-based activities such as hiking, bird watching, and environmental education.
