On June 19, 1943, a routine World War II training flight ended in tragedy when a Lockheed Ventura PV-1 bomber lost control and crashed here, killing all seven airmen aboard.
Today, efforts are underway to restore and protect the diverse habitats of this area, supporting a wide range of resident and migratory wildlife. The site stands as both a place of natural importance and a memorial to those who gave their lives here.
